We had a GREAT field trip today!! I am so proud of our students' behavior as well. Our bus driver said we are the best first grade group she has ever seen! Way to go first grade leaders!! A HUGE thanks to all the parents who went as a chaperone. We could not have done it without you! Enjoy some pictures of our fun day!
This week, we learned about the planets and outer space. We wrapped up our week by exploring rockets! We did two different activities. In the first experiment, we created a balloon rocket using string, a straw, a balloon, and tape. Students got to watch the rocket take off across our classroom! We tried several different times in order to make the rocket go farther. In the second activity, students got to create their own rocket and use their own air to launch it. We also got to celebrate meeting our April class goal with popcorn and a movie!! It was a super fun day! Check out some pictures below! Upcoming Events and Reminders:
Mrs. Allen is in need of adult volunteers for Field Day!! If you would be willing to donate some of your time, please follow the link below to sign up!
Field Day Volunteer Application THANK YOU!! We are very excited to have a new leadership song at Willard South! This song is extra special because it was written AND performed by Willard South students! Follow the link below to listen and watch! Enjoy!
Willard South Leadership Song Here are a few things that we have been working on: Reading-We learned about animal life cycles this week (butterflies and frogs). We read a nonfiction book and an article to learn about each phase of the life cycle. We discussed some new vocabulary. Today, students created a butterfly life cycle using pasta and rice! Writing-This week, we continued to add more details to our personal narratives. We also read Froggy books and practiced using some special features (transition words, ellipses, sound effects, and all CAPS) in our writing. We used the Froggy books to investigate how other authors use these special features. Math-We are working on telling time to the hour and half hour. We will take our Topic 13 test on Tuesday. I am sending home the review page for this topic today. Please go over it with your child and return it to school by TUESDAY!! Science-This week, we investigated different animal parts and how the animal uses it. We talked about different animals' ears and noses. Students got to choose a set of animal ears and an animal nose. They illustrated their face with the animal part and wrote about why they chose that animal. These projects are displayed in the hallway! You should come check them out! Upcoming Events and Reminders:
Happy Spring! I am so glad to finally be getting some warmer weather! Here are some things we are learning in Room 30:
Reading-Last week, we read two books by Valeri Gorbachev. (The Big Trip and That's What Friends are For) Both stories are about the adventures of Pig and Goat. Students practiced comparing and contrasting both characters in the story. We also practiced retelling the beginning, middle, and end. This week, students are learning about dairy cows through the book Clarabelle. This ties in perfectly to our study of animals in science. Writing-For 4th quarter writing, we are coming back to narratives! Students wrote narratives in 1st quarter as well. This time around, we will be focusing more on adding a lot of details to our writing! We will continue to focus on good punctuation and capitalization. Math-We are wrapping up Topic 12, which focuses on measurement. Students reviewed with a partner today using an online test on the iPads. Our test will be Tuesday! We will begin Topic 13 this week, as well. We will be learning how to tell time to the hour and half hour! Feel free to get a head start at home! Science-This quarter, we will be learning about animals and plants. We kicked off our unit by studying different habitats. Students learned that a habitat must have three things in order for the animal to survive there: food, water, shelter. We wrapped up our study of habitats by creating habitat posters with a group. Students had to illustrate their assigned habitat. They had to include animals that would live in that habitat and provide food, water, and shelter for the animal. Students were able to SYNERGIZE and our posters turned out great!! Upcoming Events and Reminders:
This week is Read Across America Week, which is a week of celebrating one of our favorite authors...Dr. Seuss! We read several of his stories and did some fun activities to go with them. We even got to try Green Eggs and Ham! Ask your first grader how it tasted! In other classroom happenings:
Math: We are wrapping up Topic 11 soon!! This topic has been focused on subtraction with two digit numbers. We have been working on several different strategies to subtract (drawing models, using an open number line, using a number chart, and using mental math). We will have our test next week. Be on the lookout for a review page to come home at the beginning of next week! Writing: We are also wrapping up our opinion writing unit. We have been reviewing all of the important parts of opinion writing. We also looked at several different opinion writing pieces and scored them together using our first grade opinion writing checklist. Students will take their final writing prompt assessment next week! Reading: This week we practiced asking and answering questions about a fiction text. Students were assessed over this skill today with a short passage and question set. Everyone did GREAT!! Upcoming Events and Reminders:
