Mastery Connect
Mastery Connect Definitions:
Mastery-Based on the questions assessed or the scoring guide used, the student shows evidence of understanding a particular standard 80% of the time. Each question on an assessment is aligned to a Missouri learning standard. Assessments usually contain more than one standard and students may show mastery of one standard but not on another standard in the assessment. In MasteryConnect, the color “green” indicates the student has shown evidence of understanding of that standard 80% of the time.
Nearing Mastery- Based on the questions assessed or the scoring guide used, the student shows evidence of understanding a particular standard 70% of the time. In MasteryConnect, the color “yellow” indicates the student has shown evidence of understanding a particular standard 70% of the time. The color yellow indicates that extra practice is needed for that student to understand and master that standard.
Remediation- Based on the questions assessed or the scoring guide used, the student shows evidence of understanding a particular standard less than 70% of the time. Each question on an assessment is aligned to a standard. Assessments usually contain more than one standard and students may show mastery of one standard and show the need for remediation or re-teaching of another standard in the assessment. In MasteryConnect, the color “red” indicates the student has shown evidence of understanding of that standard less than 70% of the time. The student will need extra practice and more time in instruction to master that particular standard.
Pre-Formative Assessment--A pre-formative assessment is the assessment that takes place before instruction is given. This assessments guides the instruction the teacher plans for the students in her class. If most students have a good understanding of a particular standard already, then the teacher can plan to focus attention more deeply on other areas of the curriculum. Many times, a pre-formative assessment will contain a lot of “red”. What this tells the teacher is that the standards have not yet been taught. Students are not expected to show a lot of “green” on these pre-formative assessments. However, if a student has many areas of green on the assessment, the teacher will then provide enrichment activities or activities that go deeper with the understanding of that standard.
Post-Formative Assessment--A post-formative assessment is the assessment that is given after most of the instruction for a unit has been given. This alerts the teacher to the students that still need instruction in a particular area. At this point, the teacher reteaches those areas that students did not show “mastery.” A student who shows mastery of the standards does not need to take the Summative Assessment.
Summative Assessment--A summative assessment is the final assessment given for a unit of study. This assessment follows the pre-assessment to guide instruction, the actual instruction of the unit of study, the post-assessment that shows which areas need to be retaught, and the re-teaching of the areas that needed to be retaught. However, the standards are not only taught one time during the year; they will reappear in other units and the student will have the opportunity to show mastery again.
