October is my favorite month of the year! I love the crisp, fall air and the changing leaves (and the pumpkin spice coffee creamer)! October is also a very busy month at school. Thanks to everyone who attended Open House this week. We had a great turnout and it was so fun to see the kids sharing their learning with you. Here is an update on our classroom learning this week:
- Math-We started Topic 3 this week. We focused on learning our doubles facts with a fun chant. I will link the video below. We also practiced using doubles facts to solve near doubles facts (doubles plus one and doubles plus two facts). We worked on making ten to help us add.
- Reading-This week we read different versions of Little Red Riding Hood. We talked about some new vocabulary words and practiced comparing and contrasting two stories.
- Writing-We are continuing our work with narrative writing. Our first quarter writing assessment is coming up quickly so we are reviewing the skills we have learned so far this quarter (transition words, good beginnings and good endings, and good sentences).
- Social Studies-This week we introduced map skills. Students learned about how to read a map using a map key. They also learned about a compass rose and each of the 4 cardinal directions. We used the mnemonic decide Never Eat Soggy Waffles to help us remember the directions. We also created a map of our classroom together. Students created their own version in their map skills booklet.
