Today students investigated how animals stay warm in ice cold water. They put their hand in a bucket full of ice water. BRRRR! It was so cold! Then they put their hand into a blubber mitt and stuck it into the bucket of ice water. We noticed that our hands felt much warmer inside the blubber mitt. We discussed that many animals have a thick layer of blubber (whales, polar bears, penguins, etc) under their skin. This helps them stay warm in the frigid arctic temperatures!
